For this year’s Penguin Competition, I chose Dara McAnulty’s ‘Diary of a Young Naturalist’. The brief given was a “…cover design that is, above all, a beautiful package that does justice to Dara’s deeply intimate and sensitive memoir about his experience and the joy of immersing himself in the natural world. The cover should feel timeless and confident and, just as the book breaks the boundaries of traditional nature-writing, whilst still appealing to that readership it should resonate with a much wider audience.” My cover aims to visualise Dara’s dependency on nature at times when he feels overwhelmed, as it helps him to regulate his thoughts. Inspired by the quote, “You can focus in one one thing: a flower, bird, a sound, an insect.”. The cover also takes a key part of Dara’s writing in which he mentions his senses, specifically sounds.
