MSA Stage 3 School of Architecture

Luke Martinez

Part 1 Architectural Student. I have a keen interest in devising sustainable architecture through careful consideration of the materiality, energy performance and to the way the project interacts with its surroundings. Designing with this in mind, I aim to develop spaces defined by the way in which they interact with light to create engaging and exciting environments.

The UFEx

The Applecross UFEx scheme makes use of unused or neglected land around the Glasgow canal with the intention of regenerating the land to accommodate growing plots and using the canal to transport goods in the form of fresh produce, making the canal culture relevant again.

By harnessing the verticality of the landscape and exploiting the southern orientation at Applecross as well as implementing a rainwater harvesting system, the UFEx works towards achieving the RIBA sustainability outcomes, with emphasis around sustainable water cycles and net zero carbon emissions.

Spaces around the UFEx are designed to allow for a multifunctionality programme allowing for a flexible environment to host a range of activities, increasing the building’s use in the years to come.
The design creates a framework for a streamline process where produce comes in, is cleaned, dried, etc and then either packaged to be distributed around Glasgow or put back into the scheme to be cooked and consumed by the students and the UFEx team.
The central atrium is the crux of the UFEx, it is not only establishing a connection throughout the scheme but provides opportunities for an ideal environment for learning, empowering the community with knowledge about where their food comes from and how to eat healthily.
