Ruorong Ni
I’m Ruorong Ni, a Chinese visual artist/photographer working primarily with digital platforms to create still photography, moving image and animation. I attempt to reflect on the psychological status of human existence and environmental stresses in contemporary society from my own experience to evoke universal emotional resonance.
My main interest is emotion and mental disorders. However, my recent project focuses on spiritual world, working with makeup artists and fashion designers to create portraits with metaphors.
The context of my project takes place within a reconstructed worldview where the conflicts in reality are insinuated and amplified by limiting the extreme circumstances.
The Painted Skin
Inspired by a Chinese traditional ghost story ‘The Painted Skin’, thisproject is a personal visual narrative in a dystopian context. Through re-creation of the main imagery in the story, I would like toconvey that God, evil and human-being are not written in black and white.
Lethe
This project is about the goddess of forgetfulness in Chinese mythology, Meng Po, who serves Meng Po Soup in sheol to wipe people’s memory so they can reincarnate into the next life. What if Meng Po Soup is to give soul a memory instead of erase it, will Meng Po put poison in the soup, where is Meng Po’s memories. With these questions, I create a personal visual narrative.
