One One Nine Apart-Hotel
‘One One Nine’ is an Apart-Hotel that’s central focus is creating a ‘Home-Away-From-Home’ guest experience, allowing guests to better connect with the city. Apartments offer the opportunity to live like locals, transforming the nature of staying away from home; thus, reinventing the city break experience. With the rise of rental sites such as Airbnb, more and more, people are steering away from the “One-size-fits-all” hotel set ups and are looking for a greater, more unique, experience when travelling.
Throughout the apart-hotel there are several subtle nods to tenement-esq features, playing homage to a stereotypical Glasgow ‘home’. This is intended to provide guests with a quirky insight into local culture and history. Along with that, Scottish designers, and locally manufactured design, is interweaved throughout the rooms. As well as a variety of apartments, ‘One One Nine’ also contains a bar and kitchen restaurant, open to both guests and locals for a drink and a bite to eat. Along with that, they too have a small café that sits on the corner of Sauchiehall street, a little cosy nook to sit and watch the world go by.
RECEPTION
Upon arrival at the ‘One One Nine’ Apart-Hotel, guests will be warmly welcomed into reception. Reception is located underneath the archway that unites both the North and South building together. While transforming an external space into an interior one, it felt important to celebrate the quirky features of such a unique space.
The exposed red sandstone provides a strong sense of warmth, while the smooth cast concrete floors allow for smooth manoeuvring of luggage through the
space. Through warm tones and homely touches, the space aims to promote a sense of home and belonging from the second guests walk through the doors.
ONE ONE NINE: CAFE
The ‘One One Nine’ cafe is a spacious, light and airy space to kick back, relax and socialise. A wide variety of freshly baked good are produced daily; with options to take-away and sit in. The smell of freshly baked bread and cakes helps to create a sense of home and warmth.
ONE ONE NINE: BAR AND KITCHEN
A variety of different tiles and textures are used throughout the bar to create a strong sense of character and personality, in doing that,
it was important to balance the cold, hard surfaces with hues of orange and gold; provoking feelings of warmth. The combination of
different materials allows the space to feel contemporary and modern, while also feeling classic and typical of a ‘Glasgow local. ’
BAR SEATING AREA
The burnt orange feature wall and honey tan leather chairs help to soften the hard edges of the surrounding materials.
Wooden blocks stretch up to ceiling behind the banquette seating, mirroring that of the over- hanging feature above the bar (intended to referenece a ‘pulley’ - typically seen in a Glasgow tenement kitchen). The blocks simultaneously function as a divider, creating somewhat of a corridor when transitioning from the reception to the bar, allowing guests who want to go straight to their apartments to do so without feeling as though they are traipsing through the bar in order to get there.
CIRCULATION SPACES
Circulation spaces throughout the apart-hotel are heavily influenced by a typical Glasgow tenement close. Despite taking a lot of inspiration from this, it was important for the corridors and staircases to be kept bright and airy, where a large majority of tenement closes tend to be relatively dark. Smooth terrazzo floors (with accents of blue) line the corridors, with flashes of lightly textured concrete on the stairs. Cream ceramic tiles stretch up 3/4 of the wall making the corridors feel taller and more spacious; creating a fresh and inviting walk to and from apartments, encouraging guests to unwind and relax.
APARTMENT ONE: BEDROOM EXAMPLE
The bedrooms within 'One One Nine' are heavily influenced by 'Kitchen Beds' often seen in traditional Glasgow tenements. In keeping with the traditional materiality, warm oak has been used for the overarching structure with soft back panelling to soften the surrounding hard surfaces.
APARTMENT TWO: BEDROOM EXAMPLE
The beds within these apartments are designed using the same concept and material palette as the smaller apartments, however, on a larger scale in order to accommodate up to eight people.
In a room with so many occupants, it’s important to allow guests to maintain an element of privacy within the room. Little curtains can be pulled round the individual beds in order to create their own personal space. This too is handy as in a larger group, not all guests may wish to vacate to bed at the same time. The addition of the curtains not only softens the space, but also provides a little barrier to dull down any noise and block out light.
APARTMENT BATHROOM
Across the two different types of apartments, the bathroom design is the same (in shape, size and theme). It was important to ensure that bathroom design remained uniform across all apartments to ensure the same level of luxury for all guests.
The shape, and layout, of the bathroom design was greatly inspired by that of a typical Glasgow tenement bathroom (being long and thin). Despite that, the colour palette and details within the design were significantly inspired by that of the Glasgow underground - the second oldest underground sytem in the United Kingdom. As ‘One One Nine’ celebrateslocal culture, history and travel, using the underground as inspiration drew upon all those elements, paying homage to a little local travel history!
APARTMENT TWO: KITCHEN EXAMPLE
Particulary in the larger apartments, the kitchen is one of the key spaces. It is multifunctional; operating as not only a practical space but as a social hub. Similar to the bedrooms, inspiration was taken from ‘kitchen beds’ within a typical Glasgow tenement, and reimagined. When not in use, young children would spend their day transforming the space into a variety of different spaces through play and imagination.
Following that sense of fun and imagination; this unique corner of the kitchen encourages guests to have fun, creating a kitchen disco within the apartment.
KITCHEN DISCO
At nights, when the city lights shine into the apartment; the sea of disco balls reflect twinkles and sparkles across the room. This quirky feature is intended to help create fond, lasting memories for the guests of their time at the ‘One One Nine’ apart-hotel.
