Play in Calton
More recently there has been an influx of new arts and entertainment hubs. The Barras is no longer what it once was, with a sense of abandonment sweeping the streets, The lack of local schools education hubs and entrataiment is what Barras requires. The lack of education creates a huge rise in poverty which leads to life struggles such as unemployment, the goal is to provide the city with a public and safe play/learn environment that will open-up to serve as a living room for civic engagement.
The proposed civic building is a a reflection of the current social educational and living condition for kids/families in Barras. In-work poverty in Scotland has been rising-up with 70% of children enduring poverty, coming from households where at least on adult is in work. Nearly 4 out of 10 Glaswegian children are living in the most deprived areas. This thesis intends to provide a safe space for kids and their families to learn and play through a varity of activities. Children express themselves through play while also developing imagination and emotional strength. Play is also necessary for proper brain development.
