Anuschka Barlas
I am a Scotland based artist working across a range of disciplines, including painting, drawing, printmaking, handwoven tapestry and film. My practice is rooted in drawing from observation and memory to explore the sensation and emotion of familiar places and people. Using a variety of mixed media intuitively, including graphite, pastels, inks and watercolours, as well as woollen yarn and thread, and with an experimental and expressive approach to mark-making, my work seeks to echo both the tactile and fleeting qualities of lived experience. An integral part of my process, drawing allows me to understand my subject and relationship to it/them, as well as bridging the leap between initial impressions and more developed drawings, paintings, prints and handwoven tapestries.

Subtle Topographies
The fluid shapes and marks which emerge and coalesce in my recent works relate to the fluidity of memory and our perception of places.
In addition to referencing the presence of the self, they also suggest vast geological formations, the passage of time, sedimentary accumulation and overlay, and meaning lost and found in form. The playful and intuitive coupling of visual gestures towards a human presence and geography can be seen as a metaphor for the dialogue between the means of production and the physical and imagined places which the work draws on.
Considerations about the physical and material properties of liquid pigment and woollen yarn, as well as the emotive qualities of colour, drive the alchemical transformations in these works. Pigment pools and woven landforms collide and shift, creating subtle topographies, which echo a particular landscape and light as well as a longing for them.
