The C3 Campus is a civic space for Calton people and anyone who are interested to get to know Calton’s music & art culture. Looking into the resources around the Calton and Barras, the Barras or the wider community could use a collaborate platform for creative stimulation and idea and information exchange.

The architecture itself form a node to draw pedestrian flow and function as a platform for exchange activities for different cultural groups via a variety of events and programs inside the creative campus. The design intention is to strengthen the bond between different groups and form a network with other civic space for communities to meet, connect and collaborate.

Barras as the heart of early entrepreneurship and merchants and the world’s famous market known for bargain goods, has significant historical importance to Glasgow, but the identity of the district has been rectified from time to time due to repeated demolish and reconstruction in forms of urban development.

I propose to protect the district and preserve its character by retaining most of the existing buildings (and bring down the container structure that is considered relatively temporary and shows no specific character of Barras) and refine the structure to a much stronger concrete or sandstone open plan structure to support changeable floor layout and flexibility on program changes. The intention is to have the buildings remain with barras in the next 10 decades or more.

-Within district-

To continue work on what is left off from P2, the general scheme is to retain and refine long-lasting structures from the existing and to honor Barras’s identity through revival of Barras’s architectural language and an integration of commmunity-oriented design.

– Ground floor are to be entirely permeable to allow future adaptive reuse and flexibility for a list of commercial and communal activities.

– As remote working is likely to persist, a number of mixed-use outdoor spaces are introduced to the neighbourhood to cater people’s needs on working away from home and relaxing.
These places are inclusive and aims to attract a variety of users in the district, to give them a place to hang out even at after shops are shut.

– Affordable co-living units are to enhance livability and can be seen as a housing option for families and artists.

– Community building provides resources and community supports that are lacking in the area and a platform for people to interact, to get to know each other and to get to know the community better.

Given the resource of an abundance of artists in the district, adding an art market is to boost creative industry and in hope to help the diminshing economy of Barras. It is also a node to connect with the wider context of the city.

-Within programs-

In terms of domesticity and labor, in consistency with P1, the concept is to legibly separate dwellings from commerce with community space as intermediate layers. Public and private realms are also to be clearly defined and at times buffered with semi-public areas.
