O’DONNELL DOWNING

O’DONNELL DOWNING is an image maker concerned with truth and objectivity. When working photographically, she uses the medium as a method of documentation rather than self-expression and understands the value of a photograph to be in the thing photographed and not the photograph itself or the photographer who took it. She strives to photograph anything and everything. O.D.D is currently making work using hardcore pornographic imagery as her source material. She intends to draw attention to the disturbing nature of this content and questions the impact of it.

Porn – 2021/22

My current work examines the violence and misogyny in mainstream hardcore pornography and questions what effect this has on everyday sexual practises and sexual violence. I aim to engage viewers and promote conversations about these issues that they may not believe are relevant to them.

^ "MASTURBATOR", card, 27x32cm

This work is named after a video featured on the homepage of pornhub.com' titled 'MY STEPSISTER’S PUSSY TURNED OUT TO BE THE BEST MASTURBATOR'

^ "DOGGY", card, 42x52cm

^ "SUBMISSIVE ANAL VIRGIN GETS HER FACE FUCKED", card and pine, 150x380cm

This work was inspired by a banner carried in the 13th March 2022 protest calling for radical reform within the police in regards to sexual violence against women. The protest was on the anniversary of the vigil in memory of Sarah Everard who was raped and murdered by a serving Metropolitan police officer. The banner carried by protesters read 'POLICE ARE PERPETRATORS'. The words on this work are the title of another video on the homepage of ‘pornhub.com’.

Consistent exposure to hardcore pornography from childhood is commonplace. This work questions what impact this might have on real-life sex.
