Niamh Campbell (she/her)

My graphic design practice consists of interests in identity, typography and publication design, working with both digital and physical outputs. This year in particular I’ve combined archival research with primary work to give context and narrative to my projects, pulling on research driven concepts.

Banned: a poster exhibition celebrating the art of letterpress

A student-lead exhibition in which a small group of us produced letter-pressed posters, following the brief of taking context from a piece of writing, film, music etc. that was banned/censored, either currently or at one point.

The event took place in Graphical House, King Street, Glasgow on 18th March 2022.

Circular Glasgow

The brief given to us was to curate and design a fringe event to run alongside or be an alternative to the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) hosted in Glasgow. My main objectives for this project was to create an event that would be inclusive and interactive for the general public in order to welcome those who would not normally interact with events on climate change. All whilst still being cautious of the aftermath the event would have and trying to be as low-impact as possible. Considering the large amounts of international people who would be visiting the city and wanting to interact with its culture, I decided to utilise the rich array of local and sustainable businesses Glasgow has, and therefore create a pop-up event in which celebrated this whilst acquiring the public with the knowledge and skills to aid in a better future for the climate.

‘Circular Glasgow’ is a pop-up up-cycling event, hosted in George Square, that partners with local businesses ti encourage a circular economy; less consumption and less waste. The event is hosted through a 4 day stall market that offers workshops and one-to-one tutorials from local business owners.

Mother / Father

10 personally selected books; 5 from mothers’ bookshelf and 5 from my fathers’. In doing this, I will highlight the contrast between the two selections and allow the publications choice of design and layout to aid this. Use of Gestalt Principles is prominent throughout the publication, making the context of the book more engaging as well as approachable.

Penguin Book Cover Competition

For this year’s Penguin Competition, I chose Dara McAnulty’s ‘Diary of a Young Naturalist’. The brief given was a “…cover design that is, above all, a beautiful package that does justice to Dara’s deeply intimate and sensitive memoir about his experience and the joy of immersing himself in the natural world. The cover should feel timeless and confident and, just as the book breaks the boundaries of traditional nature-writing, whilst still appealing to that readership it should resonate with a much wider audience.” My cover aims to visualise Dara’s dependency on nature at times when he feels overwhelmed, as it helps him to regulate his thoughts. Inspired by the quote, “You can focus in one one thing: a flower, bird, a sound, an insect.”. The cover also takes a key part of Dara’s writing in which he mentions his senses, specifically sounds.

The Baths

‘The Baths’ is a display font inspired by The Western Baths in Hillhead, Glasgow. The project celebrates the iconic indoor swimming pool, built in 1876, highlighting the traditional architectural fixtures as well as the inherent movement found within; from reflections of the pool to movements seen in the use of the trapeze set. Organic, flowing strokes mix with architectural serifs that move from thick to thin.
