Jingchun Hu (she/her)

I’m an illustrator from China. I started drawing illustrations in 2018 and entered the Glasgow School of Art in 2020 to study illustration. During my postgraduate, I  engaged in developing my visual language and color experiments. The inspiration for my work comes from contemporary life and culture. I discovered emotional responses and new perspectives in response to environments through observational drawing. My work explores these perspectives and themes through a range of traditional media. I mainly work on drawing picture books, illustrations, zines, and daily sketches. My graduation work is a children’s picture book named ‘Eno’ which follows a story about a dog’s journey. It is still in the progress.

Eno

My children’s picture book ‘Eno’ follows a journey of discovery for the main character, a dog called ‘Eno’, finding his place and value in the world.

This is a children’s picture book as my final project. The story is about a dog named Eno who is about to face the dilemma of going out with his owner for the first time in an hour, and in that hour he seeks the advice of various partners in the house, and in the end, he overcomes his fear of the outside world and sees the outside world. The story was inspired by a period during the Covid-19 when I was facing the upcoming study abroad. It contains a reflection of this stage of my life and by extension, a pondering of the challenges I faced in growing up. Therefore I wanted to use a children’s picture book to conceive a childlike story that would express my feelings and thoughts about life and my growth.

Museum

This is a 2-page comic I drew in a comics workshop on Stage 3. I illustrated a story of a couple who visited a museum following a tour group. The story is fictional but based on my experience and imagination when I visited a museum. It contains my thoughts on the status of humans in the historic river and the significance of past, present, and future.

One Day Trip!Glasgow

This is the first project of Stage 3, an observational wordless picture book documenting what I saw when I first arrived in Glasgow. I spent a whole day wandering the streets alone to feel this city. As a stranger with a different cultural background, it was a new experience for me. I used particular color schemes to illustrate the feeling this city gave me at different moments. I wanted to record my first impressions of the Glasgow cityscape and reflect on the relationship between people and the city.
