Extension of regional culture – Barras Cultural Centre

Through the research on Calton, it was found that music has a great meaning to Calton. From the Metropale Theatre, one of Glasgow’s first concert halls, to the famous Barrowland Ballroom and now Barras Art and Design, Calton has always been about music and the arts. However, preliminary research revealed that Calton’s art and music-related buildings were spread across different parts of Calton and were not concentrated, making it difficult for people with similar interests to meet and interact with each other. The decision was made to continue the culture of the area and to design an integrated cultural centre in site where people can meet and relax.

In comparison with other areas of Glasgow, Calton is poorer and has a high crime rate. Around 40% of children who live in Calton are from low income family and 36% of residents are overcrowded.Acultural centre space for surroundings which could provide them a place to read, to learn music instrument, to rent art studios in low cost and to communicate.

It is hope that this venuecould bring a vibrant public space to the community for all age groups. Some of the causes of the high crime rate are poverty and a lack of good guidance. At the same time, arts are not and should not be exclusive to the wealthy. Hope this cultural centre could provide opportunities and venue for the less affluent families and children to learn music, read, attend exhibitionsand performances, and in the future, to change the environment of the community.

It is also hope to provide a space for people who live in overcrowded spaces to meet, interact, relax and have fun.

Domestic & Labour – Urban Housing

In the last three years the epidemic has hit the world and people’s lifestyles have begun to change dramatically. People have gone from waking up at home, going to a café for breakfast and going to work to doing all their activities at home.

A study of the Calton area shows that Calton is more deprived and has more children from single-parent families than any other area in Glasgow. At the same time, Calton has a large number of arts and music related buildings and events which have led to a concentration of artists in the area.

The project therefore aims to provide housing for single parent families and shared housing with work space for a variety of people. There are three different types of shared housing to choose from, providing living space for two to ten people per household.

Working at home is becoming more and more common, and with the outbreak of covid, many people are forced to work at home. When working from home, separating work and family life is crucial, not only more efficient at work, but also more relaxed when resting.

In this design, the working area is on the second floor and the family space is on the first floor. There is no need to pass through the family living space to reach the work area when entering from the threshold. The privacy of the family can be guaranteed even when there are visitors. In addition, at the end of work, you need to go downstairs to reach the resting space. This long road can make it easier for people to switch off.

The double-high living and dining room and the small balcony on the first floor bring plenty of light to the second floor. At the same time, the windows between the second floor and the first floor can be opened when needed to facilitate ventilation and communication with the living room。
