MDes Communication Design School of Design

Esther Omez (She/Her)

Originated from France, but educated in a multicultural environment, I am a passionate, open-minded, socially aware and multidisciplinary designer. I have graduated from a Bachelor’s Degree in Product Design at Lasalle College of the Arts in Singapore, before pursuing a Master’s Degree in Communication Design at the Glasgow School of Art.

During this course, I have developed an interest in branding, typography, and editorial design, which led me to work primarily with publications and digital media to create interactive visual identities. My work this year has been focusing on developing an awareness of social and cultural issues, by exploring the relationship between food and cultural heritage. The majority of my time was spent at community workshop conducted by social enterprises, uncovering and highlighting the power of food that grant us attention, compassion and love through the act of caring and sharing.

Always seeking to create a unique, innovative outcome. I have a sense of challenge and results, opened to new opinions but keeping my determination to defend my beliefs. I am a social, enthusiastic, motivated and dedicated person who works hard to succeed and who is always eager to go out of my comfort zone to learn and progress.

Le Sens Du Partage

Le Sens Du Partage translated as “the meaning of sharing” is a project that aims to understand the relationship between culture and therapy through food. Food connects people, food allows conversation to be created and knowledge to be shared. In this project, through the making of a recipe book, photographs of food workshop and interviews, I am highlighting the power of food that grant us awareness, compassion and love through the act of caring and sharing.

Having lived in Africa, Europe, and Asia, since my young age, I was raised and educated in a multicultural environment. Indeed, having the chance to discover new culture, new languages, new history, new tradition and new food it fostered my interest to understand the relationship between culture and food and how it can be represented in an educational way through the art of cooking. Food brings people together, it’s how we express love, it’s our cultural heritage and everyday life. Therefore, food became a sort of therapy through times and generation. Being a really sociable person, I wanted to work on a project that would allow me to expand and sharpen my organization, management and relations skills, but as well that would allow me to develop my creative skills.

Within this project, I personally aimed to develop my knowledge in terms of printing method and production but as well to enhance my skills in editorial design, publishing and photography. Moreover, I critically developed my work, identified and explored key contextual issues through my involvement within social enterprises that enhance community regroupment through food activities, interview with food designer and the organization of workshops. It allowed me to showcase my executive, understanding and analysation skills by studying in-depth socio-cultural, historical, political and behavioural factors to collect data and approach my research and outcome in a meaningful manner.

As a graphic designer, but mainly a visual communication designer, my goal was to create a conversation between individuals and allow others to learn, discover and connect with other cultures. It is really important to understand and appreciate each other’s differences and how we can learn from them without appropriating them for ourselves and spread a feeling of joy and happiness.

Le Cap Martin

The photo book “Le Cap Martin” is a project that aims to showcase photographs of a particular city in the South of France named Roquebrune Cap Martin. Throughout this project, I personally aim to develop my knowledge in terms of digital photography, printing method and book binding. I expect to challenge myself through this project to explore this knowledge in-depth in the creation of a photo book.

Being born and raised in France was always something I would be proud of, especially when I could consider it as my home. However, as much as travelling around helped me open my mind and my understanding of other culture, it also allowed me to reflect on the importance of my roots and my origins. Indeed, each place we have been help us remember who we are and help us forge our identity. As I went back last Christmas I decided to record my trip and transform it into a personal project that would always remind me later on of that place. Thus, this project aims to explore the representation of escapism and memories of my childhood through a series of photographs representing the town and the house where I spent my holiday with my  family in the French Riviera.

The book displays in a narrative, near-documentary form about the life and architecture of this small town in the French Riviera, located between Nice and the Italian border. The small town architecture is a reference in the history of Modern Architecture, which regroups various historical monuments classified under UNESCO Heritage sites. The architecture styles vary between colourful and Haussmannien buildings, which are also influenced by Italian lifestyle and culture. I spent most of my childhood here with my grandparents and my family. This trip to Le Cap Martin and the house was really nostalgic, as I didn’t have the chance to visit for over four years. The book opens with coastal views, colourful and elegant buildings and lively interactions of its citizens. It then goes on to focus on a personal view of my childhood house. I aim to bring the viewer on a story telling journey, recording the boat quay, interior design of my grandparent’s house, sea side restaurant, with as much care as I record the sea and the details of the surrounding landscapes.

Une Bougie Dans La Nature

The project A Candle in Nature aim to display the story of a candle based on a study on Typography. Therefore, within this short publication, I intended to showcase my skills in Editorial Design by following a minimalist layout. My approach to the layout was inspired by the way poems are constructed and how the words play used in calligrams allow the imagination to run through the lines. Thus, each page contains a different style, separated by colourful and three-dimensional graphic design in the shape of a letter. Each letter is cut, allowing the reader to see through the next page and are forming at the end the word candle.
