Catherine Tinney (she/her)

Relationships between clothing, identity, and language, have been explored through my studio practice, connected to my design history and theory essay. Through conversations and object sharing with three Glasgow-based Gaelic speakers I gathered research about their favourite clothes, items, photos, and discussed personal meanings. Conversations brought up recurring themes and items represented a connection to memory, community, and language away from home. Mark making, painting and collage have been used to attempt to visually represent the research capturing aspects of texture, form and colour from landscapes, photographs, objects, and clothing from each participant.
The resulting printed textiles are to be worn, with the idea that if the garment has sentimental value attached, it will be looked after and cared for to encourage a sustainable relationship with clothing. Each print is unique and individual to the wearer, communicating their own story in a visual textile format.
